sorry, i'm getting ahead of myself. he's still lingering ... but we can but hope!

[tommy-s] my father is old but not dead

[Capt. Mainwaring] hold on a minute, just how many Tommys are there?

[KuKuKaChu] sorry tommy ... i know how attached you are to dad
[KuKuKaChu] but just think of the inheritance!!

[KuKuKaChu] 7 buddhist monks have just now visited pak harto.
[KuKuKaChu] sorry, 5 monks, 2 nuns. they are praying for his recovery. bastards

[Capt. Mainwaring] nice.
[Capt. Mainwaring] why don't they just fit a complete set of new giblets, he could go on for years?

[KuKuKaChu] doctors have just issued a denial that pak harto has carked it
[KuKuKaChu] i love it when they do that

[KuKuKaChu] 101 Uses for a Dead Dictator
[KuKuKaChu] i'm still struggling with No. 1

[Capt. Mainwaring] don't be nasty

[KuKuKaChu] i'm trying to put a happy face on it, that's all

[KuKuKaChu] oh! now 100 becak drivers are praying for pak harto! they say they 'miss him'
[KuKuKaChu] they miss all those orde baru certainties, when all the trains ran on time. or at least, no-one would say a word if they were late

[KuKuKaChu] you know, i think the old bugger is dead. everybody's denying it. even SBY. so it must be true!
[KuKuKaChu] TNI are making funeral arrangements!!
[KuKuKaChu] wuhu!!
[KuKuKaChu] they want to bury him in Solo!
[KuKuKaChu] i guess they'll have to wait for him to stop breathing, first
[KuKuKaChu] not that i personally would be fussed
[KuKuKaChu] seems family, however, want him planted in karanganyar ...

[Ena] I wonder if he has passed away? Or if he will pull a fidel?how old he is now?

[KuKuKaChu] 86

[Ena] oh! still can some years left

[KuKuKaChu] we can but pray
[KuKuKaChu] that that is not the case

[KuKuKaChu] i wonder if the rakyat will storm istana cendana and ransack the place upon news of his demise?
[KuKuKaChu] wishful thinking, probably

[KuKuKaChu] looks like TNI are determined to plant him in solo
[KuKuKaChu] possibly to keep him away from the marauding mobs
[KuKuKaChu] they have coded the funeral "rencana kegiatan alpha". i wonder if they'll stage a coup at the end of the operation?
[KuKuKaChu] wishful thinking, again

my theory is that pak harto has been dead for hours, and that operation "rencana kegiatan alpha" (alpha activation plan) is not just about how/where to bury the old fucker, but also, how to protect orde baru figures from retribution, and how to precipitate an "incident" that will justify a new military intervention.

A sharp steak, but I can't see how that will help.

Suharto is only slightly improved by death at this stage. Better a Nepalese-style death to the dynasty, with Tommy massacring the entire family, as well as the fawning generals/politicians, before fatally shooting himself.

A Viking funeral in the Ciliwung river, would take years to put the old bugger out.

Suharto 'suffers organ failure'

Former Indonesian leader Suharto is suffering from multiple organ failure, his medical team says.
He is losing consciousness and having "very bad breathing difficulties", the Jakarta hospital where he has been since last week said in a statement.

Family members of the 86-year-old have rushed to his bedside, where he remains in a critical condition.

Suharto took power in 1966 and ruled the archipelago with an iron fist for the following three decades.

He has been in seriously ill for some time, suffering from anaemia and low blood pressure that doctors said were caused by heart and kidney problems.

Reuters reported that Indonesian Vice-President Jusuf Kalla was at the hospital and was expected to address a news conference later.

Heart and lung specialists have also rushed to the hospital.

"I have just received urgent calls to come immediately to the hospital. His condition is deteriorating," Ismoyo, a cardiologist, told the Associated Press news agency.

Relatives at his bedside were praying and reciting verses from the Koran, family aides told AP.

Suharto has lived quietly in Jakarta since being overthrown in 1998 amid political upheaval triggered by the Asian financial crisis.

But although accused of embezzling huge sums from state funds during his three decades in power, his lawyers have always successfully pleaded that his failing health meant he should not stand trial.

Suharto has been in and out of hospital in recent years with a series of health problems, including a stroke.

Send him my best, I'll be in the smoke end of next week and he did once offer to buy me a beer - an offer I hope still stands as my Mum has packed him a lovely hamper of organic produce, 100% veg and passed by the Beth Din.

You're right, I've seen the little chap training with Daley.

smh is saying he has more or less bounced back after the case will be settled out side court?

" "We have reached a deal with Soeharto's family ... that the civil case related to the Supersemar foundation will be settled out of the court,'' Attorney General Hendarman Supanji told reporters.

A criminal case against Soeharto was abandoned in 2006 due to his persistent poor health but the civil suit, launched last year, was seeking $US1.4 billion ($1.57 billion) in damages and returned stolen assets skimmed off the foundation.

Supanji said he had met with the family of Soeharto under the orders of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Under Indonesian law, if a defendant dies during such a civil suit, his or her family must instead defend the case.

"If we settle the case in court, it means that there's one loser and the other wins and the process will be quite long. But if we settle it outside the court, then there will be a win-win solution,'' he added.

Soeharto's allies had called earlier in the week for the case to be abandoned but they were rebuffed by the attorney general.

Soeharto has rejected allegations he and his family were sitting on a fortune of between $US15 billion ($16.77 billion) and $US35 billion ($39.13 billion).

Investigations into several other charitable foundations that Soeharto chaired have been ongoing. It was not immediately clear whether these would continue.

Yudhoyono himself was rushing back to the country today from Malaysia, where he cut short an official visit by several hours.

Soeharto's six children and many of his extended family had gathered at the hospital last night. Vice President Yusuf Kalla also visited for several hours and left without commenting to media.

In Yudhoyono's absence, Kalla would have been authorised to announce his death, according to protocol.

Soeharto presided over massive economic development in Indonesia, but his rule was marred by the corruption allegations as well as rights abuses, particularly in regions where separatist sentiment ran high such as East Timor, Aceh and Papua. "

From today's Grauniad::

Indonesian dictator Suharto finds forgiveness on his deathbed

Lisa Murray in Jakarta
Sunday January 13, 2008
The Observer

As former Indonesian President Suharto lay dying in a Jakarta hospital last night, it seemed the nation, which he ruled with a repressive and often brutal hand for 32 years, had almost forgiven him.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono urged people to remember Suharto's achievements after cutting short an official visit to Malaysia to return home to monitor the former dictator's condition. Suharto's heart had stopped and his lungs and kidneys failed on Friday night but he was revived by a team of 40 doctors. He is still on respiratory support and has shown signs of intestinal bleeding, doctors said.

Article continues

A parade of the country's political and business elite has entertained the hundreds of reporters camped outside Pertamina Hospital in south Jakarta since Suharto was admitted a week ago. Even human rights activists have come to leave flowers for the 86-year-old.

Five army planes were put on standby to ferry Suharto's body and his family to Solo, in central Java, for the burial after news wires began reporting his rapid decline on Friday night. Vice-president Jusuf Kalla rushed to his bedside, ready to announce the inevitable.

It's hard to believe that the subject of all this attention was named and shamed by the World Bank and the UN last year, as the world's most corrupt leader. Transparency International estimates Suharto and his family stole $15-35bn of state assets.

He was also the head of the army when it oversaw the destruction of the Communist party, in which more than half a million lives were believed lost. And during his reign as president, secessionists in East Timor, Irian Jaya and Aceh were brutally repressed.

'Suharto had some mistakes in the past, but that should not prevent us from giving our gratitude,' President Yudhoyono said yesterday. 'President Suharto is a leader of this country and has made some achievements, especially in economic development.'

Many do credit Suharto with lifting Indonesia out of the economic doldrums. Supporters outside the hospital on Friday held a banner reading 'Father of Development, Indonesia will never forget you'.

Helped along by an oil boom, the economy grew consistently above 6 per cent for the three decades Suharto was in power. Living standards rose as people had greater access to roads, schools and electricity and foreign investment surged. But the good economic run came to a shuddering halt with the Asian financial crisis in 1997.

Paradoxically, almost 10 years ago to the day Suharto opened the hospital wing in which he now lies. It was one of his final acts as president, before being forced to resign amid riots and international pressure.

Suharto will be buried in the family mausoleum, just outside Solo. Preparations are already being made at the site which is surrounded by bamboo groves and sits on the hilltop reserved for the royal family. Suharto's wife is already buried there.

The health of Indonesian former leader Suharto has deteriorated further, and he is now in "very critical condition", his medical team says.
"Almost all of his organs have experienced a decline, especially his heart and lungs," said the head of the team, Marjo Soebiandono.

Mr Suharto, 86, had shown signs of improvement on Saturday, a day after he suffered multiple organ failure.

But the family were told on Sunday that things had got worse, his doctor said.

"This morning there was an urgent action to clear the respiratory tract because signs of blockage of the respiratory tract were found.

"The conclusion is that there is a regression in the function of almost all organs and the condition of Haji Muhammad Suharto is very critical."

Earlier Mr Suharto was visited by Singaporean minister Lee Kuan Yew, a friend and contemporary.

Mr Suharto's three daughters were also present, but the former Indonesian leader was either sleeping or unconscious during the visit, according to officials.

On Saturday, Indonesia's president cut short a visit to Malaysia because of the deterioration in Mr Suharto's health.

Mr Suharto ruled Indonesia with an iron fist for three decades until 1998.

His supporters credit him with leading his country from poverty to relative prosperity, but he is also accused of repression and responsibility for severe human rights abuses.

He had been seriously ill for some time before he was admitted to Pertamina hospital in Jakarta a week ago with anaemia and low blood pressure.

After initially responding will to a blood transfusion and kidney dialysis, his condition deteriorated rapidly on Friday.

Is the doctor implying the old man has a heart?

Even the Hookers are Praying for him!

From AFP:

The Koran Tempo daily reported Monday that hundreds of sex workers had held prayers for Suharto at a red light district in East Java.

"In the time of Suharto's leadership, our complex was really safe," a long-time security guard of the Taman Wanita Harapan Gude (Garden for the Women of Hope) complex, identified as Suwandi, told the daily.

"At that time, there were no officials, soldiers or whatever groups who levied illegal levies here," Suwandi sighed.

(Obviously remembering the "Minge Benefits" he recieved under Suharto!)

Already suggested but due to the carrot cruncher's failure to honour his wager, I'm not sure we could trust people not to turn into straw the minute it came to weigh-in time.

They should send Cliff Richard into to sing the poor old bugger a "get well soon" greeting , if that isn't enough to have him trying to tear his own giblets out, then I don't know what is.

Don't forget his achievements, boys.

which are?

this thread looks more like a fishing line for those who wish to defend a certain gentleman of indonesian persuasion. I watch and anticipate with glee.

Why? what is wrong with the old fellow?

Quote:
I also welcome the inclusion of Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, who has gone from being a far left socialist to an inclusive 'green' innovator, and is championing renewables, energy from waste, heat and power systems, and ways Londoners can adapt their homes. The capital has seen a huge increase in cycling, and from this month most of the city's public buildings will be "retrofitted" to save energy. It's beginning to work, he says: four years ago, more than one in three Londoners used their cars every day; now fewer than one in five do.

Now if Fuddy Bozo, Governor of Jakarta, were to show a similar commitment, then I would call him a hero and by his real name and I wouldn't harp on about how he seemingly managed to amass a fortune during his 30 years as a City Hall apparatchik and said he isn't over-worried about the perennial floods "because other cities get flooded."

A comment from Jakartass that is tormented to the extreme -

1) The capital may have seen an increase in cycling because public transport gets even more dangerous.

2)"now fewer than one in five do." (londoner's using their cars everyday) - nothing to do with Ken, , fuel at over 20,000/litre and roads that are full of holes are the key issues here.

What is ONE billion?

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.

* A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
* A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
* A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
* A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

Now realize that Pak Suharto has 20-35 of those billions tucked away. The start of a new family dynasty. In 400 years his ancestors will speak reverently of him and the immediate family now.

Jakarta (Antara News) - As former president Soeharto`s condition has shown progress, the presidential physicians` team expressed optimism on Saturday he will be able to leave the hospital in the near future.

"In general his condition has improved and his blood pressure reading is stable, namely 110/40 mm Hg. The functions of his heart and lungs have also improved, and indications of systemic infection have lessened," the medical team`s head, Dr Mardjo Soebiandono, said at Pertamina Hospital.

Given the improvement in the ex-strongman`s condition, the team was optimistic that Soeharto could return home and his medical treatment could be continued there.

Dr Mardjo Soebiandono said the team was keeping up its efforts to improve Soeharto`s general condition, for instance by trying to maximally reduce his dependence on a ventilator and other medical devices.

Meanwhile, former minister/state secretary Moerdiona said if Soeharto had recovered enough to be sent home, it should be done soon.

"If he is allowed to go home, he should be taken home. I think, the sooner it is done, the better," he said.

He said Soeharto`s family fully left the decision on when he could be treated at home to the presidential medical team.

Former justice minister Ismail Saleh visited Seoharto for the second time on Saturday, the 16th day of Soeharto`s hospitalization at Pertamina Hospital, south Jakarta.

Multi-talented artist Dorce Gamalama and around 200 orphans under her care, offered prayers for Soeharto`s recovery in the hospital`s lobby.

"Today is Orphans` Day and we are celebrating it by praying for Pak Harto`s health . We wish him a speedy recovery," Dorce said.

Soeharto was hospitalized for multiple organ failure after a decline in the functions of his heart, lungs and kidneys.(*)

I see we got a mention in Metromad...

Trying to gauge public opinion last week on everyone's favorite English-language personal-abuse forum, Jak Chat, I found mixed sentiments in evidence. There were those trying to cast the man's achievements as, "The father of development," in a favorable light to someone else's prediction that, "If you gave this man an enema you could bury him in a matchbox," (actually that one was mine but keep it under your hat).

Some wit had posted up a little vignette involving SBY visiting the old boy in hospital and the ex-president wheezing like Darth Vader through his ventilator, "SBY... I am your father." Very witty Oscar, although possibly there is a serious point here behind the jape, namely Susilo BY's rather risible and offensive suggestion that the whole nation pray for Suharto. Not national awakening but a national wake.

Yes but you've got more than one to go for here. This is not a theocracy. This country's political systems and judiciary are ostensibly secular - although not entirely as you can't be an atheist, scientologist etc. Secularism is about freedom as opposed to religious tyranny - which is where this country of sheep is heading.

It's heading to a religious country. I wouldn't say a theocracy, anyway.

But "religious" can be just one step before "theocracy". This goes with the idea that "religious" is different from "spiritual". The former is largely concerned with rituals and the outward trappings of faith. The latter is more concerned with the mystery of living.

Religiosity can lead to spirituality, under the correct circumstances. More likely I think, religion - the codified beliefs and rituals of belief systems - closes itself to change, and becomes the antithesis of spirituality. Any system that is not open to the dynamics involved in our living each day can be a hindrance to obtaining useful knowledge about what it takes to be successful in this world.
----------------------------

In this morning's Jakarta Post, the deputy secretary to Vice President Jusuf Kalla stated that the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) cannot dictate government religious policy. The MUI is that rabid Muslim policy group that issued fatwas last year stating that Indonesia should not be a pluralistic society.

The latest MUI flap concerns the government having given Jemaah Ahmadiyah, a wayward Islamic sect, three months to prove it is not contradictory to Islamic values. MUI already has issued a fatwa that Ahmadiyah must be disbanded.

VP Kalla's secretary told The Jakarta Post that "Islamic organizations [i..e., MUI] should respect the 12 Ahmadiyah statements and stop the attacks on the group".

Meanwhile, MUI's deputy chairman said the council respected freedom of religion [i.e., Pancasila], but could not tolerate deviation from Islamic principles. How's that for doublespeak?

"Some rules applied will guarantee that freedom of religion does not violate the law; does not stain religion values; does not bother public order and peaceful life; and does not bother people's harmony," said Ma'aruf, the MUI's head of edicts.

He said that, in a departure from usual MUI procedure, the council did NOT conduct an investigation into Ahmadiyah before declaring it heretical.

"The Ahmadiyah group is an exception. We didn't have to do any investigating since the group has long been internationally known as a heretical Islamic sect," he told a discussion.
------------------------------

If powerful groups, like MUI, have their way, this country will become an Islamic theocracy. In other words, Indonesia will become a religious nazi nation, instead of developing the pluralistic, more tolerant values upon which it was founded.

Exactly, I read that yesterday and thought ,"What an idiot," but logic is not a strong point throughout this country's political machinations. Indonesia is becoming more religiously INTOLERANT. Secularism is all about tolerance and not burning churches, persecuting Christians OR Muslims for that matter. It's about protecting minorities and human rights. Muslims believe their warped value system is special? Fine, just leave me the hell alone. Leave me to think and use my brain in peace and I'll meet you at the evolutionary bell curve.

What really pisses me off about the Heath Ledger thing is that he was in the middle of filming a new Terry Gilliam movie.

Gilliam is one of my favourite directors and a bona fide genius, but he has absolutely zero luck getting his movies completed

JAKARTA : A few hundred metres from the hospital where the former Indonesian president is struggling for his life, human rights groups pressed on with their demands for Mr Suharto to be tried for corruption and human rights abuses.

27 of the most influential civil society organisations in Indonesia have formed an alliance called KERAS - People's Alliance To Try Suharto.

Their members gathered at a busy overhead bridge to collect signatures from the public for their cause.

The alliance said similar efforts will be carried out throughout the country.

"We will go to the hospital with these signatures to show that the public still want Mr Suharto to stand trial," said Yoseph D Lali, People's Alliance To Try Suharto, KERAS

Since the 86-year-old former leader's health took a turn for the worse, segments of the Indonesian population have called for his pardon.

Among these are Golkar, the party that was in power during Mr Suharto's 32-year rule, and the Islamic Prosperous Justice Party or PKS.

Human rights groups oppose such a move.

"We are willing to forgive him on humanitarian grounds. However, he has not been convicted, so there is no basis to pardon him," said Lali.

Indonesia's Supreme Court has ruled that Mr Suharto can longer stand trial for criminal charges due to his ailing health.

But a civil case against him will continue as his family has rejected a government's offer for an out-of-court settlement.

Several charity foundations once headed by the former leader are alleged to have been misappropriated more than US$1.4 billion.

Heated debate on whether to pardon the former president is expected to continue for some time to come.

Human rights groups have urged the government to set up an independent commission to help arrive at some form of closure. With the issue splitting Indonesian society, they hope the authorities will respond to their call soon. - CNA /ls

Uncle Suharto could learn a lot from Mr. Ledger.

It was very amusing that they didn't let Habibie in to see him though.

Ex-Indonesian Dictator Suharto Dies
By ANTHONY DEUTSCH 15 minutes ago

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) Former dictator Suharto, an army general who crushed Indonesia's communist movement and pushed aside the country's founding father to usher in 32 years of tough rule that saw up to a million political opponents killed, died Sunday. He was 86.

"He has died," Dr. Christian Johannes told The Associated Press, adding that he died at 1:10 p.m.

Finally toppled by mass street protests in 1998, the U.S. Cold War ally's departure opened the way for democracy in this predominantly Muslim nation of 235 million people and he withdrew from public life, rarely venturing from his comfortable villa on a leafy lane in the capital.

Suharto had ruled with a totalitarian dominance that saw soldiers stationed in every village, instilling a deep fear of authority across this Southeast Asian nation of some 6,000 inhabited islands that stretch across more than 3,000 miles.

Since being forced from power, he had been in and out of hospitals after strokes caused brain damage and impaired his speech. Blood transfusions and a pacemaker prolonged his life, but he suffered from lung, kidney, liver and heart problems.

Suharto was admitted to a hospital on Jan. 4 and had been in intensive care. Over the past week his physicians had spoken of a recovery, but that had changed dramatically by Sunday, when his condition took a sharp downturn.

Anyone here work at The Jakarta Post? Don't report that the Australian reaction to Suharto's death was mixed/whatever-lah... Aint nothing about it - all attention instead on retirement of an Australian cricket player and a tennis match happening tonight. Though a few people in Oz are getting cunted to celebrate his long overdue demise.

I am planning on designing a game to celebrate his death. The player who demonstrates his ability to shaft all the other players, graft, murder and then smile all the way to a natural death wins. I will of course be taking 10% on every transaction

I think it is unfair the way that some are comparing him to Adolf Hitler. Adolf was actually innocent of the Holocaust!

History has proven that Adolf was misheard when giving orders while Pak Harto just got on with it.

What is with The Jakarta Post taking out its own half page advertisement to offer its "deepest condolences on the passing of H.M. Soeharto".

"May his soul rest in peace."

Fuck me. What about the souls of the million-odd he murdered?

Well yes. Indonesians have their cultural traditions and are respectful in death. Not such a bad thing. In this case though a long hard look in the mirror about now would do this country the power of good.

Rest In Peace? It should be clear to most that Beelzebub will be using this man's arse cheeks as a toast rack forever and eternity.

Suharto was Indonesia's Pol Pot: Sukarno widow

The Japanese widow of Indonesia's founding president Sukarno says she will never forgive his successor Suharto for his repression, and has likened him to Pol Pot.

Suharto seized power from Sukarno in 1965-66 and ruled with an iron fist for another three decades.

"I don't want to lash out at a dead man but I cannot forgive Suharto," Ratna Sari Dewi Sukarno, Sukarno's third wife said.

"He was Indonesia's Pol Pot," she said, referring to the late leader of Cambodia's genocidal Khmer Rouge.

Dewi, a former bar hostess born as Naoko Nemoto, married Sukarno at age 19 in 1962 after he was charmed by her on a state visit to Tokyo.

After Sukarno died under house arrest in 1970, she returned to Japan where she has become a television personality and runs a jewellery and cosmetics business.

Despite Indonesia's economic progress under Suharto, his tenure was marked by repression, from the killings of at least 500,000 communists and their sympathisers from 1966, to invading East Timor and quelling separatist movements in Aceh and Papua.

Dewi blamed Suharto both for the death of her husband, "the man who declared independence and became Indonesia's first president," and for the mass killings around the country.

"Although he had a soft face, he could be cruel and heartless at the same time," she said.

"You could not tell what he was like on the inside.

"What he said and what he did were two different things."

She scolded Suharto for not making court appearances late in his life to answer corruption charges, citing illness.

"Even today, many Indonesians suffer from that legacy and the income gap continues to widen," Dewi said.

"He ended his life living among friends," she said.

"I think he was a very lucky man."

Suharto was buried today in a state funeral in central Java after a long illness.

Make it more realistic by having your missus take 15% on every deal. And let your son take 20% from certain oil/gas deals and give him a national clove industry and national car to play with and break. Then give him a gun to shoot anyone who tries to punish him. And give him a few "get out of jail free" cards.

etc...

And what about Simamora's front page lead story in the Post? Unmitigated unsubbed grovel, no? ... sake. And why does the Post not ditch its "what's inside" row from beneath the masthead for its biggest headline since Suharto's resignation nearly 10 years ago?

Etc.

I notice that since the wonderful news arrived, a certain brown-nosed person has vanished from the scene. How fortunate that I didn't notice them before.

I realise it's a little late, but I'm opening a couple of brews now.

I had to avoid a dispute the other night -- usual crap about "you know where you stood with Suharto" --- when talk turned to the murder of millions of people I got the response "well you lot have murdered millions" I am English my fellow debater was from Northern Island. I have been around long enough to know that is not a conversation worth entering in to.
