Jalan Jaksa Festival to be held this weekend
JAKARTA (Antara): The annual “Jalan Jaksa Festival” is going to be held this weekend, with Governor Sutiyoso is scheduled to officially open the event on Saturday, official said.
The event actually starts Friday, but the Governor will officially open it on Saturday,” said Oyong Hana Abidin, spokesperson of the Central Jakarta administration on Thursday.
Oyong said that this year’s festival would be organized by the Kebon Sirih Karang Taruna youth organization..
As many as 80 stands will take part in the two-day event, offering various tourism products and services, Oyong said, adding that the event which is also held to commemorate the country’s Independence Day, was expected to attract some 500 visitors, including foreign tourists.
Jalan Jaksa in Central Jakarta is known as the city’s main tourist site, especially among back packers, as it offers affordable accommodation. (**)

indeed. and is jaksa really a "backpacker centre"? it may once have been, 10 years ago. it sure ain't now. JP journalists really need to get out once in a while and not just regurgitating tired old "facts" from the archives.

hard to know what it's about really, apart from giving a few of the local lads an income for a few months. it's a locals scene to some extent, though i'm sure some foreign tourists would find the music on offer interesting. there are also the usual "handcraft" stalls and clothing from china ... outside my office at night they show indonesian action movies on a big screen strung up over the street. seems very popular. and loud.

All I know is that I was at the "so called" Jaksa festival last night and saw a bule up on stage with Fuzzy Bozo (sic) and he was kinda funny, and did the bule name some good, for once.

I have most of his tv shows on DVD. Quite frankly he's about as funny as a truckload of dead rats in a tampon factory. However, he is very handsome and probably rather hirsute. And he was an amenable landlord during the dire straits when I delved into the squattocracy. Nothing quite like a lingering dip into the Dickensian dosshouse for orphaned shoe-shine boys.

i've never actually seen the program actually, so i'll have to take your word for it.
it's apparently been repeated quite a number of times, but always way past my bed time.

That particular episode of Fenomena was a gleaming example of tawdry smut posing as current affairs. The best (and most cringe-worthy) part was an interview with a particularly tawdry PSK, who claimed her bule clients paid handsomely for her to take it up the gary glitter. I'd never seen her on Jaksa, so can only assume she was rounded up for the show and coached to spout such venomous slander. Either that or she hangs out in Memories when not in Tiga Kuda.

I've often thought about working under Emma Waroka Hawkins. But unfortunately, Fenomena has been axed. Perhaps Dorce Show needs a sleepy halfwit co-host. Don't really fancy working under Dorce though.

"Jalan Jaksa Arts Festival: Jakarta's Tourist Street will come alive with Traditional Betawi Folk arts, parades, music, and food that will stretch out the KH. Wahid Hasyim shopping street."
"Jaksa Street Festival 7/01/2007 - 8/31/2007 Jalan Jaksa is the main backpacker and tourist street in Jakarta which is lined with cheap accommodation, budget restaurants and friendly bars. Each year it celebrates its diverse identity with the annual Jaksa Street Festival which includes live music, art exhibitions, craft stalls and sporting contests. The sole goal of the day is to have fun and entertainment usually carries on late in to the night."
The only prominent artists on Jaksa are piss artists and bull artists. And the charming fellow who used to do charcoal drawings of bare-breasted women, but now mainly peddles unobjectionable oil paintings, including imitations of Dutch masters.

This is an old local geezer with teeth like a burnt out village and a pony tail - looks like a right good steam cleaning would do him good. In saying that the whole of Jaksa would disintegrate if you threw a bar of lifebouy in the middle of it.

noted your apology in The Jakarta Post yesterday! (first time i've read the sunday post for ages, actually. there were at least 3 articles/columns worth reading ...)
i don't know what happened to the festival ... it was supposed to continue into sunday, but it seemed to have had the plug pulled. i'm doing the audit on their books this week, so should be interesting to see what really happened ...

Just saw the pictures of Fuzzy and the Jaksa boys on stage during the festival and I believe the two blokes are part of the "wild regulars" from Romance. They can usually be found in Romance with there wives every weekend trying to coax them down from the tree pole in the middle of the cafe.
Apparently there's no end to the scum they'll allow to participate in the Jalan Jaksa Arts Festival. We're playing a short gig tonight on the stage set up more or less next to Romance Cafe. We are *supposed* to be starting anywhere from 8 to 9PM.

Well, our set was shaved down time and time again, first to 6 songs, and then 5 songs, and then finally a pathetic 3 songs. I do feel somewhat satisfied that we played our three heaviest, noisiest songs and managed to cause two fights to break out in the mosh pit in front of the stage.
I do believe that's the first and last time we'll be playing at the Jaksa Festival. Hardly worth the drive considering that I practically live in Katmandu.

as usual organised by thugs from outside jaksa. Whole event was just an excuse for a giant cigarette promotion. For some reason okusi was not invited to audit this year.

Yeah, I thought so too. I'm not sure who the hell organized it, but they should pull their heads out of their asses.
I was none too pleased when Afro-Rocker-MC-guy started shouting "Last song! Last song!" after our second track we played. The fucking idiots probably don't even realize that pulling this sort of shit doesn't exactly cause bands to want to participate again next year.

no, my audits are strictly behind-closed-doors affairs. however, i would certainly be prepared to audit the quality of the bands that are playing. problem is, i suspect they would be "unauditable", much like my official assessment of last years festival finances.

There was an interesting incident last night on jalan jaksa. Two foreign gentlemen somehow managed to manouvre their (identical looking) cars through the glass facade of the ex-pool hall next door to romance cafe. More amazingly, it appeared as if the cars had been intentionally parked inside the building, perfectly parallel. Needless to say, it drew quite a crowd of onlookers in addition to the perpetrators and the law. I only managed one photo on my dodgy handphone.

Presumably as a result. What, is it blue now? Actually I forget. Anyway, he didn't really hit anything while parallel parking, with no other vehicles nearby. more of a prolonged back and forth movement that didn't really reach a satisfactory climax, kind of like from all accounts.

Can't beat Weekend World (with Brian Walden). I remember Michael Heseltine tapping his toes along to it at the end of an interview as he faded to silhouette.
