Romance, or Capt. Morgan's Pub, is the quintessential Brit Pub, run by a jolly Welshman and his wife. It's small, air-conditioned and intimate, which complements the friendly ambience. At least 30-40 long time Jakarta residents (from Europe, N. America and the Antipodes) call it their "local". Despite the regulars and the intimacy, it is a VERY friendly and welcoming place to everyone.



The staff, consisting of Evy, Dewi and couple of younger new gals, along with Mas 1 and Mas 2, are all pleasant and friendly. They know all the regulars by name and serve cold beer (Bintang, Anker, Carlsberg, Guinness & Heineken all for less than Rp 18000 for big bottle), Aussie wine and a whole range of top shelf spirits (Glenfiddich, Smirnoff, JD, et. al) at arguably the best prices in Jakarta.

Their food hits the spot. Great fresh-cut chips/french fries with lots of HP sauce to dip into. The Cheese Burgers are massive and juicy and my Brit friends say the Shepherd's Pie is to die for. They also have the standard Indo fare of Nasi Goreng etc. The old Bapak outside on his food cart does some fantastic satay and he'll serve it to you inside the pub no problem.

Two Cable-connected TVs (one of which is one of those huge Flat-screen digital jobs) and there is usually some sport or another on these. Best place in town for the World Cup games in this writer's opinion.

It's located directly across the road from Ya Udah Bistro at Jl Jaksa No. 40, and usually stays open until about 3am, later if some important event is on.

Not sure what "pokies" are, but I can check for you.

Pokies is the name given to slot-machines, one arm bandits, gambling machines that you see in there very own special rooms, usually attached to bars all over New Zealand (and Sydney as far as I could see, well ok, one bar in Koogi!)

oh, one of those deals. Those are also popular in little bars in Italy. No, Romance doesn't have anything like that. But most of the regulars usually get some sort of wager going during a big match.
