Howard defends AFP, warns travellers
Prime Minister John Howard has defended the role of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and warned travellers about the dangers of involvement with drugs overseas, after two members of the Bali nine were sentence to death.
The two masterminds of the Bali nine heroin smuggling operation, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, have been found guilty in an Indonesian court.
Two couriers, Michael Czugaj and Martin Stephens, have today been sentenced to life imprisonment, joining fellow couriers Renae Lawrence and Scott Rush, who were sentenced yesterday.
Mr Howard has rejected criticisms of the AFP over the arrests of the Bali nine and says he feels desperately sorry for the families of those convicted.
"I defend the role and the action of the Australian Federal Police," he said.
"It's no good blaming the police or blaming others.
"I feel desperately sorry for the parents of these people I do. All of us as parents feel that way but the warnings have been there for decades and how on earth any young Australian can be so stupid as to take the risk is completely beyond me."
Mr Howard has pleaded for Australians to learn from the sentences.
"Can I just say to every young Australian, please take notice of this," he said.
"I even beg them not to take the terrible risk that these young people have done, their lives destroyed.
"In the case of two people, their lives could well be taken. You can't expect governments in other countries to take a soft view of drugs."
The remaining three members of the Bali nine will have their verdicts handed down on Wednesday.
Sydneysiders Matthew Norman and Si Yi Chen, and Tan Van Nguyen from Brisbane, are all under the age of 24 and face the prospect of spending the rest of their lives in an Indonesian prison.

I would shoot every on of them.

That heroin was going ot end up on the streets of Sydney.

Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran would be driving Porsches on the profits obtained for the misery of young drug addicts.

SHOOT THEM ALL. Hell, give me a pistol and I will do it.

I HATE drug dealers. In a world of scum they are the lowest. I will hold a party the day they die.

They're just stupid asses, man. They want big dollars. That's why they smuggle those drugs to Sydney, to make easy money and have good times.

I'm glad they will get shot in front of a firing squad. death to the drug dealers, to save other lives.

Even though Sydney has the biggest problem with drug, good on the AFP. Let the problem be handled with care. Kill those drug dealers; if they are punished in Australia they'll just get bailed out and do it again, and more Sydney people will get killed because of those drugs.

Howard hits out at 'jihad' Muslims
George Megalogenis
February 20, 2006
JOHN Howard has strongly criticised aspects of Muslim culture, warning they pose an unprecedented challenge for Australia's immigration program.

While he remained confident that the overwhelming majority of Muslims would be successfully integrated, the Prime Minister said there were two unique problems that previous intakes of migrants from Europe and Asia did not have.

"I do think there is this particular complication because there is a fragment which is utterly antagonistic to our kind of society, and that is a difficulty," Mr Howard told The Australian.

"You can't find any equivalent in Italian, or Greek, or Lebanese, or Chinese or Baltic immigration to Australia. There is no equivalent of raving on about jihad, but that is the major problem."

The Prime Minister also expressed concern about Muslim attitudes to women. "I think some of the associated attitudes towards women (are) a problem," he said.

"For all the conservatism towards women and so forth within some of the Mediterranean cultures, it's as nothing compared with some of the more extreme attitudes.

"The second one of those things is a broader problem, but to be fair to them, it's an attitude that is changing with the younger ones."

The comments are contained in a new book to mark the 10th anniversary of Mr Howard's rise to power. Written by The Australian's team of journalists and commentators, The Howard Factor -- a decade that changed the nation will be published on February 27 and launched by the Prime Minister on March 2.

Mr Howard gave a series of interviews for the book on December 9, the final sitting day of the parliamentary year for 2005. This happened to be just two days before the race riots in the Sydney beachside suburb of Cronulla.

The Prime Minister did not specify which Muslim source nations he was concerned about.

By placing Lebanese immigrants in the same integrated category as the Italian, Greek, Chinese and Baltic, he appears to have been referring to the Christian rather than the Muslim intake from the Middle East.

The president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, Ameer Ali, said the conservative Muslims about whom Mr Howard was talking represented only a "tiny fraction".

"There is (also) a tiny fraction of Australians who believe in white supremacy," said Dr Ali, who chairs Mr Howard's Muslim advisory group.

"I think he (Mr Howard) understands that the large majority of Muslims are like everyone else.

"In any society there are immigrants who try to hold on to their traditions, and it takes time to change. My faith is in the following generation -- the next generation will be more adaptive."

In the interview, Mr Howard was upbeat about the immigration program.

Australia crossed two immigrant thresholds in 2003-04, which is the latest year for which Bureau of Statistics tables are available. The overseas-born population rose to 24per cent -- its highest proportion since the 1890s. And the European share of the immigrant total fell below 50 per cent for the first time.

The previous Labor government of Paul Keating had the overseas-born at 23 per cent of the population, and the European component was 57 per cent.

Mr Howard seemed genuinely pleased when the numbers were read out to him.

"Really? I think what it demonstrates is that we have run a truly non-discriminatory immigration policy."

After slashing immigration in his first term between 1996 and 1998, Mr Howard has steadily ratcheted up the intake to levels that now exceed those under Labor's Bob Hawke in the 1980s.

As Opposition leader in 1988, Mr Howard attacked Asian immigration. He later apologised and conceded the move cost him his job at the time.

His comment in August that year was: "I wouldn't like to see it (the rate of Asian immigration) greater. I'm not in favour of going back to a White Australia policy. I do believe that if it is -- in the eyes of some in the community -- that it's too great, it would be in our immediate-term interest and supporting of social cohesion if it were slowed down a little, so the capacity of the community to absorb it was greater."

Mr Howard's latest observations on Muslim culture are not in the same category, because they do not suggest the rate of Muslim immigration should be slowed down in the interests of social cohesion. "The public sometimes mixes up attitudes to immigration with attitudes to our identity and our history," he told The Australian.

"I think one of the reasons why people have been accepting of all of this is that they feel they have a Government and a Prime Minister that is in favour of what I might call a slightly less zealous multiculturalism than was practised by my predecessor.

"Not a return to assimilation so much, but somewhere in between, which is what people want.

"What resonates most with people, I find, is they don't mind where new people come from, as long as they've got skills, and as long as they become Australians when they arrive.

"But that doesn't mean they should forget where they were born."

Religion can we say as a cultural phenomenon, as a cultural system, religion or faith could be establishment and mobilization of power when sometimes can create a conflict, and in here when faith or religion (as a culture) used in a society as a real, will born paradox of reality at the other side religion could be integration of the instrument, but at the other side religion could be a factor of disintegration. In a objective reality, religion become threatened factor mostly serious at all of side of living or society especially to complex society

About attacked at US Embassy yesterday, it's scary and brutality I think, ok if US done something wrong, but please it can be solve with dialogue not with uneducated, and brutality actions, so what know, its not solved after all, please we can think as a human with cool head, and they said like this and like that was a "crime of religion", and they should apologize, and Playboy considered as a "forbidden" magazine in Indo, but don't they realize, sinetrons or soap opera with religious theme right now, its so vulgar and full of violance too, not all of the people who done something wrong or sins in their life must die and kind of desease, they have right to life and repent their life. mad frown
Of course PB, the world has gone crazy, so crazy until it feels this world so fragile for our next generations to live, politics and all of the instruments.

I understand how the protesters feel. And i think the cartoons were stupid and pointless.

And I know the USA has made a lot of mistakes - and sometimes doesnt care about Islamic countries.

But non muslim people see the riots and get frightened. and frightened people are dangerous. They do silly things in return.

So the west will do silly things, and Islam will do silly things, and the west will do crazy things, and Islam will do crazy things.

And we will all die.... frown

You should be proud of your self, proud of your deeds, proud of your family.

But why should we be proud of where we live?

BUT - people will always bond together under some real or imagined connection or relationship.

Religion, a military group, a geographic location, skin colour, membership of a “gang” or clan, will always be used to identify people.

Einstein would have done well to see LA gangs defend their territory, or meet (as I have) the Yakusa, all identified with missing finger.

Einstein and Johnston were both great men, but also great fools. One split the atom in his mind, the other collected words for a dictionary…….

MT, its not XU XU Klan, but sadly there is a growing feeling in the West.

At first it was hard to see and understnad. The newspapers started saying "Middle Eastern Men" a lot of times. Then came 911, Bali 1 and 2, and London, Madrid etc. Each time the West hardened a little more. In the bars, at work, in cafes, people worry and complain.

Cronulla Riots were the first visible sign. but it is not the last. my friend in England talk about burning down all mosques. In France the headscarf is banned etc.

We MUST stop this crazy situation NOW......

What happened at the US Embassy in Jakarta and other cities in Indonesia the other day, that one of the reasons I'm not very proud to be an Indonesian. How do you feel if you live, somewhere in foreign country, and all TV channels showing all the ugly things about your country. I don't care much about corruptions, but all countries in the world are corrupt, of course not as bad as Indonesia. But attacking bules and westerns properties, bombs, killing innocents for no reasons?
SO, yes I am an Indonesian unfortunatelly, yet I still call Indonesia is my Indonesia but once again I am not proud and I don't love Indonesia, but I love the island where I born, that the reason I don't change my passport!

Im not really sure about that, I just heard that there's a picture of Muhammad's prophet on the wall in one of the offices in America, and that that made the FBI (Forum Pembela Islam)get angry, because they felt the Islam religion was condescended!

yeah appeareantly indonesia the day of the day Indonesian communities more sensitive than macan tutul;)

i thought there's a statue of prophet muhammad showed in New York. i guess that's why the moslem community in Jakarta get mad and attacked the US embassy in Jakarta, but i'm not quite sure that is the concrete reason.

I can tell you the “concrete reason” LB.

Arab extremists from the Middle East have been spreading radical Islamic ideas for several years. They have members in almost every country. Especially Islamic countries.

If you look behind the Islamic Defenders Front in Jakarta you will find a number of Syrian and Iranian lunatics who are determined to force Indonesia into becoming a fundamental state. They are slowly achieving their aim. The banning of Playboy and the banning of alcohol sales in supermarkets are just two examples of how they succeed.

Slowly, Indonesia is changing. Bules are saying to me already that they are thinking of getting out......

Look at Malaysia…… Once a free open country. On september 29, 2001, the then Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad declared that the country was an Islamic state (negara Islam). Now Sharia law exists. Nightclubs are raided by the police. Girls in short skirts are arrested and treated as criminals.

So these Islamic emissaries orchestrate protests in countries all over the world, thinking they will frighten the West. Today its Jakarta, tomorrow London, Friday its back to Syria.

Take note LB. In 5 years time, when you are being raped by a policeman in a cell in JKT for wearing a short skirt, remember Polar Bear told you this would happen. frown frown

The Answer – THROW THESE DANGEROUS ASSHOLES OUT OF YOUR COUNTRY!!!!!!!!!

Well PB, again I agree with you about this and I’m sick because of it, well it influences for all sectors mostly important, trading, investors etc, etc and trust in this country get lower like you said bules has already thinking of getting out from here because this is unsafe country, lots of bullshit and already to be Indonistan, and you know what because of this too, my “relationship and business” become “stuck and dead” they cancel it coz’ they afraid to live or visit here! Beside this is country of Republic not basically with religious, and some of this radicalism has been doctrinarians in Afghanistan, they just accept those doctrines just as their rare minds, and teach if they doing “Jihad” they will go to heaven, and one and the most important of those Jihad is war and fighting the West, but I think God and all of religion don’t teaching bad things like that, if they call Jihad as same as bombing those innocent people, it same with killing without nothing and it bloody big sins, if you read this great book by John Esposito “Unholy War” you’ll now and see the fact but it will needs lots of time to understand it, it tells you from the beginning of Osama Bin Laden until he was right now and all of his groups to attack WTC and Pentagon and all of the plan, and I’d read a newspaper long time ago told that everything and everyone even its Islam or Moslem too but if they have different mind and view with this “radicalisms”, they will “cut them off” , and it consider as a “Kafir Moslem”, how shock that, and they don’t care if those “Kafir” was one of their family member, wife, kids, mother etc, etc. And even Mr. President of Iran said too ….exclusivist of religious life who “shut” their ears to listen to different voices out there it means to try to pull in from every try to show goodwill to build a dialogue between culture or civilizations. Dialogue means not a dialogue in a theological territory above religion doctrines, or with the holly book itself but it’s a culture dialogue which digging as imperatively from the holly book and the faith itself. And with intellectualism. Oh anyway please corrections if I’m wrong. wink smile

By the way about mini skirt….I’ve try to wearing this and there was no police man to arrest me but they invite me to come and doing dirty dancing on the table while they get drunk…….LOL.
laugh laugh :p

My opinion:

If INDONESIAN people decide to have Sharia law, or become an Islamic state, then I support the wishes of the Insoneisan people. The country belongs to the people of indonesia.

BUT - it is a bunch a dangerous violent Arabs forcing Indonesia to change...... And before anyon realises Indonesia will hasve changed. Once the change has happened, you will never go back.

LOL - you can dirty dance on my table honey smile smile smile

Well PB, I underlined to your second words But....before anyone realises Indonesia will have changed, one the change has happened you will never go back....I'll "plant" that in my mind, its scary, ok if they announce that Sharia Law etc, etc but don't change this country into radical country, mad no way, and it suppose to get support from every single part of this country, goverment and especially the ulema (leader of Moslem people) they should "open" their mouth to reduce this violations. smile
Oh yeah PB, I'll and you wont regret this and never forget this for the rest of your life as a man smile smile

well, hopefully in da next 5 years i'm not gonna end up in cell wearing short skirts. beside i'm not a person who likes wearing short skirts. is not comfy enough, especially when i'm doing my job, taking pictures wink

It is possible that indonesia will be a fundamentalis state since right now, the government are trying to made the law against pornoaction and pornografi. who knows what is the next new law will be made.

I agree with MT. i don't want this country turns into a radical country, but now it depends on the people, society and i guess the most significant d government.
For me personally, i'd rather flees the country if the syria law applied in here.

Australian 'admits drug possession'

AN Australian woman facing up to 10 years in an Indonesian prison for drug possession has admitted owning a small amount of cannabis, police said today.

Barbara Kathleen Higgs, 43, was arrested on Sunday on Lombok island allegedly with 50g of cannabis and two small bags of seeds at Senggigi beach, where she part-owns a hotel named the Bulan Baru, or New Moon.
Ms Higgs – originally from Pinjarra, Western Australia, and now a resident in Indonesia – is the latest Australian arrested under tough Indonesian anti-drug laws.
Lombok police Major Tribudi Pangestuti said Ms Higgs was being questioned and was being held at a women's prison in the Lombok's capital, Mataram.
"So far she has admitted she used the drug for her own consumption," she said.

Mr Tribudi said Ms Higgs, who has lived with her New Zealand husband in Lombok for five years, allegedly admitted that she bought the drug from a friend at Senggigi for 500,000 rupiah, or $A73.
"The friend was an Indonesian and we don't know how long she's been a drug user for," she said.
"Her case will be submitted to the prosecutor shortly, as soon as possible."
She said Ms Higgs would be charged with possession under article 78 of anti-narcotics laws, carrying up to 10 years in jail and fines of up to $A73,000.
Ms Higgs had been visited by Australian consular officials from Bali and offered assistance.
Her arrest comes amid a nationwide drug crackdown in Indonesia ordered by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
A Bali court last week sentenced two Australians to death and another seven to life in jail after they were arrested trying to smuggle more than 8kg of heroin from Bali to Australia.
Again, Australian arrested!!
